Ilhabela has more than 460 years of history and plenty of remains and ruins of forts and old sugar cane mills. Several Caiçara core communities maintain alive their traditions, such as the traditional fishing and the “flour houses”.
Ilhabela still preserves the richness and diversity of its culture, result of the contact among different people - European, south American Indians and Negroes - the Caiçara culture discloses itself through the architecture of the buildings and houses, the handcraft, the fishing boats and the popular manifestations, such as São Sebastião's Congada and other folkloric manifestations lived up by dances like “cirandinha” and "quebra chiquinha ".
Ilhabela’s natural patrimony consists of a surface of about 300km2 protected by law, where 85% of the archipelago’s area are State Parks and considered by the UNESCO, as the Biosphere’s World Reserve. Ilhabela shelters rich and diversified fauna and flora in its Atlantic forest, with peaks up to 1300 meters height and more than 250 waterfalls. There are 36 beaches, each one with its peculiar atmosphere, depending on its location and surroundings. Nowadays Ilhabela offers complete lodging and restaurant infrastructure and provides support to the most varied water sports, trails and tourist trips and many more.
